London is the United Kingdom’s capital city and one of the world’s major global cities.
London has the biggest GDP of any city in Europe making it one of the largest financial centres in the world.
London probably has one of the richest histories of any city in the world being a major settlement for over two thousand years, although there were settlements on the river Thames around the area that London now occupies before the Romans arrived in England it was the Romans that built the first major settlement named Londinium in around AD80, in the first twenty years of Londinium an early rebellion by Queen Boudica of the Iceni tribe saw the city completely destroyed, all of the citizens were killed and all the buildings were burned to the ground, to this day a layer of ash can be found if you dig down to a certain depth in London. The Romans quickly rebuilt Londinium building a large city wall around the city, parts of which can still be seen today.
By the 11th century London was the largest and richest City in England, now under Saxon control saw Edward the Confessor building Westminster Abbey were William the Conqueror was crowned King of England in 1066, William went on to build another of London’s great iconic buildings, the Tower of London.
London has seen many disasters through its history including the Black death in the 14th century, the great plague and the great fire of London in the 17th century and later the blitz.
